NFTs: What are They and Why?

Good question. I didn't really understand the concept of Non Fungible Tokens when I first heard about them. It wasn't until I really got in deep with my Greg Overton NFT Collection that I really understood what they are and why people want them.

Here's the basics. The art becomes an asset on the block chain. People use Ethereum (a crypto currency) to buy and sell it and so each transaction is tracked and verifiable. That's why it's different than having an image of my art on your phone or computer, ownership can be proven. And it's the ownership that counts.

Let's start at the beginning of my NFT story. I started to hear a little buzz from other artists on social media. My now friend, Wes Henry, had become very involved in the NFT world and I reached out to him to see what it was all about. He told me about this really cool opportunity to reach non traditional art collectors through digitizing my art. I was intrigued. Probably the thing that appeals to me the most about NFTs is the idea that anyone, not just the wealthy, can own my art in a digital form. I want to share my work with as many people as I can in as many ways as I can. Wes was great and showed me the ropes and helped me get started in the NFT space.

The NFT world is on Twitter. I had never been on Twitter before so this was all new to me. Twitter is where collectors go to find NFT art to collect and where the artists go to tell the world about their creations.

It was wild! I quickly discovered this whole new world of buying and selling digital art. Immediately, my work was selling out super fast and I was having to create waiting lists for NFT collectors. I was honored that so many people wanted a piece of what I was creating.

You have probably heard about the NFT projects like cartoon apes and aliens. I don't know much about that stuff to be honest. It was difficult not to fall into the trap of creating a "project" like these famed cartoons, rather than simply allowing my art to be bought and sold in a digital format. I had to remember that I am a fine art painter in a world of digital artists. My adventures in the NFT space have been interesting to say the least.

I created my NFT Fine Art Collection, and I recently added my Apparitions by Greg Overton NFT Collection, that features my paintings brought to life through artificial intelligence technology. Fucking cool.

I am grateful, as always, for everyone who collects my art in any form, NFT, prints, originals. I am excited about new ways to create! One of the coolest things I have done in the NFT is collaborations with other NFT artists. They basically take my work and add to it to create something entirely new and amazing.

The idea with NFTs is to own an asset on the blockchain, to support artists, and to invest in something rare. I am looking forward to being part of the metaverse now and into the future. I hope you will join me there!
